Exhibition catalog printed to coincide with Portraits & Landscapes: Creative Growth at Blunk Space, May 31 through August 4, 2024.

Co-curated by Nadia Ghani, Gallery Director for Creative Growth, and Mariah Nielson, Director of Blunk Space and the JB Blunk Estate, the exhibition marks the gallery’s first collaboration with the Oakland-based non-profit Creative Growth Art Center, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary, and features four artists from Creative Growth’s community – Alice Wong, Marion Bolton, Latefa Noorzai, and Franna Lusson. Alongside existing works, the artists had the opportunity create new work inspired by interaction with Blunk’s oeuvre, through a visit to the Blunk House, the artist’s handbuilt home in Inverness, presentations by Nielson at Creative Growth, and through the JB Blunk monograph.

The catalog features images of the paintings, works on paper, textile works, and sculpture included in the exhibition, plus photographs of the gallery installation and Lusson and Bolton working at the Blunk House. An essay by Amy Mutza reflects on the intuitive approach to making shared by these artists and Blunk, and the necessity of working in artistic community.
